West Indies come out fighting after Virat Kohli’s record-breaking 29th Test century
India had a mixed day against West Indies as the hosts did well with the bat to keep the Indian bowling unit at bay after Virat Kohli scored his 76th international century, in the process equalling one of Don Bradman's feats in Test cricket.
India started their day at 288/4 and coasted in fine fashion, riding high on the shoulders of Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja as the duo kept on tormenting the Caribbean bowlers. Starting the day at 86, Kohli waited for a while before finally bringing out the big guns.
He brought up his 29th century in Test cricket, equalling the feat of the Don with an exquisite square drive against Shannon Gabriel. Opening the face of the blade in the nick of time, he steered a ball from Gabriel past point to eventually let off a steam of emotions with his signature celebration and a bow to the dressing room.
Jadeja seemed in decent touch as well but couldn’t really build a lot on the second day as he fell for 61, while Kohli had to depart for 121. However, India kept hanging in there, thanks to a brilliant display from Ravichandran Ashwin who got a fine half-century to propel India to 438.
Coming out to bat, West Indies didn’t really seem fazed on day 2 as their openers, Kraigg Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul did a decent job of helping West Indies to a strong stand of 71 before Jadeja could finally manage the scalp of the left-hander for 33. At the end of day’s play, West Indies managed to amass 86/1 that kept things evenly poised ahead of the third day’s play.
