Wanindu Hasaranga savours a clean sweep of awards in the Lankan Premier League 2023
It was a bittersweet feeling for Wanindu Hasaranga at the end of what would always remain as one of the most iconic performances in the antiquity of the Lankan Premier League, as an injury forced him out of the LPL 2023 final but at the end, he stole the headlines by sweeping the awards of the tournament.
Hasaranga was both the leading run-scorer and the leading wicket-taker of the tournament with 279 runs and 19 wickets respectively, a key element in relieving the stranglehold of the Jaffna Kings on the LPL trophy.
Waniya bagged four crucial awards, lifting the Player of the Tournament, the Green Cap for scoring the highest number of runs, the Orange Cap for claiming the highest number of scalps and also the award for the maximum number of sixes in the tournament.
Talking at the post-match interview, the skipper of B-Love Kandy, Hasaranga, said, “I'm very happy to have contributed with the bat. Our head coach Mushtaq Ahmed asked me to bat at the top of the order, and I also wanted to do something with the bat. Whether I'm captaining or not I try to do my best. This is very special because I contributed with the bat too."
Returning to the podium as the skipper of the side, he further added, “The foreign players played well. We started badly, but then we went to Kandy and won three out of three there and came back and did well here."
