Our friendship is deeper than cricket: Kane Williamson on his bond with Virat Kohli

Kane Williamson-led New Zealand side scripted history by winning the inaugural edition of the World Test Championship. There were few memorable moments after Ross Taylor scored the winning runs. One such moment was Williamson hugging the Indian skipper Virat Kohli. It's a sight we don't often see in sports. The moment redefined the spirit of cricket. The two most celebrated cricketers have frequently praised one another. This alone demonstrates their mutual admiration for one another.

In an exclusive interview with Cricbuzz, the New Zealand skipper revisited and talked about the heartwarming moment. “That was a great moment. We knew anytime you play against India, wherever you are, it’s an incredibly tough challenge. They often set the benchmark in our game in all formats. They show that with the depth that they have and their cricket as well, Williamson was quoted as saying to Cricbuzz.

Interestingly, Virat and Williamson have a long history together. They've known each other since their U-19 days. Cut to 2021, the two captains have established a trail of mind-boggling records for their respective countries. The 30-year-old also opened up on his camaraderie with the Indian captain. He conveyed that their bond is more profound than a game of cricket.

“And the friendship with Virat stems back several years and several sorts of different times. And it was cool. We always know that there’s a bigger picture to it all. It was a really nice moment and our friendship and relationship are deeper than a game of cricket. And we both know that,” he said.

The first time the two stalwarts met was at the 2008 U-19 World Cup, which was held in Malaysia. In the same tournament, there was an interesting occurrence.

DID YOU KNOW? Virat Kohli dismissed Kane Williamson in the semifinal of 2008 U-19 World Cup.
