Nostalgia Cam: Beginning of a YUZI-FUL bond!
A format tailormade for sturdy batsmen, and a league where the success of a game, largely, depended on how those sturdy men took bowlers for cleaners to enthral the crowd.
Only much later we could know how bowlers were the main architect in a mad race of ‘let’s see who hits more boundaries!’ The uniqueness of a team was defined by the bowlers who would control these sturdy men, call the shot, and much to the amusement of the crowd make the lives of the batters miserable on occasions.
When the Indian Premier League began, Royal Challengers Bangalore were lucky to have one of the greatest leg-spinners in their ranks. Unfortunately, the league also coincided with the last few years of Anil Kumble on the field.
Yuzvendra Chahal was much different and shorter than Kumble. Perhaps the only similarity they shared was a slender physique.
Having joined the IPL in 2011, Yuzi, as he is fondly called, arrived at the Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2014. Making his RCB debut against Delhi Daredevils in the first game for the club that season, Chahal was introduced into the attack in the 8th over. And guess what, he delivered a perfect leg spinner first up to fox Murali Vijay. The message was clear and concise for the world: take note of this young man. Yuzi bagged the Man of the Match and it started one of the most beautiful player-club associations in the league.
