Carlos Alcaraz Plays Bold again, defends his Wimbledon title against Novak Djokovic to script history
It was another fairytale ending for Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon as he successfully defended his title against the roaring and yet a recuperating Novak Djokovic in the grand finale. Holding his nerve to brave a late setback, Alcaraz dished out a razor-edge performance to outclass the towering Serb in the summit clash.
Despite a crackling start to the battle which saw 7 deuces and 5 break points feature in a 14-minute game, the reigning Spaniard was quick to get hold of the reins and there was no looking back for him.
Calling the shots for almost the majority of the fixture, Alcaraz stumbled in the dying embers of the clash when he had glory in his sight. In the final set of the game when Carlos sat at 5-4 and 40-love in the sixth game, he stepped into a nervy territory of errors, starting with a double-fault. With five errors on the bounce, he ended up giving the game to Djoker and a tie-breaker was enforced.
With Carlos seemingly fazed and Djoker with his signature poise sensing a turnaround, the equation of the game took a paradigm shift. However, braving all of it, the 21-year-old wunderkind smashed all his woes away alongside the championship point, cementing his authority in London emphatically.
Carlos also entered an elite clique of tennis icons as he equalled the Open Era record for most Grand Slam secured at the age of 21, joining the likes of Boris Becker, Bjorn Borg and Mats Wilander. Talking in the post-match interview, Alcaraz said, “Honestly, it is a dream for me winning this trophy. I did an interview when I was 11 and I said my dream is to win Wimbledon."
