BCCI announce last-minute changes to squad for upcoming ODI and Test series against South Africa
After India dished out an absolute masterclass to conquer South Africa in Centurion as the T20I series ended on a high, the preparations for the ODIs and the Tests are already underway. However, a few last minute changes have been made by BCCI to both the squads due to unavoidable circumstances.
Shami was included in the Test squad but his availability was subjective to fitness. However, the ace Indian quick failed to get back to peak fitness and has been ruled out of the series. BCCI’s statement said, “Mohd. Shami, whose participation in the Test series was subject to fitness has not been cleared by the BCCI Medical Team and the fast bowler is ruled out of the two Tests.”
In the upcoming ODIs, Deepak Chahar withdrew himself citing family reasons and the BCCI have brought in RCB represent, Akash Deep into the fold. The statement further added, “Deepak Chahar has informed the BCCI that he will not be available for the upcoming ODI series due to a family medical emergency. The Men’s Selection Committee has named Mr Akash Deep as his replacement.”
Shreyas Iyer will also be a part of just the opening ODI following which he will be rejoining the squad for the red-ball contests. The release continued, “After the conclusion of the first ODI in Johannesburg on 17th December, Shreyas Iyer will join the Test squad to prepare for the Test series. He will not be available for the second and third ODI and will take part in the inter-squad game.”
Also shedding some light on the coaching personnel for the upcoming series, the statement quoted, “Team India (Senior Men) Head Coach Mr Rahul Dravid, Batting Coach Mr Vikram Rathour, Bowling Coach Mr Paras Mhambrey and Fielding Coach Mr T. Dilip will link up with the Test squad and oversee their preparations for the inter-squad game and the Test series.”
