Australia lift their maiden T20 World Cup, defeating their Trans-Tasman rivals, New Zealand in tragic climax for the Kiwi side which lost its second ICC finals in their last three tournaments.

Aaron Finch seized the final toss of the tournament and decided to bowl first. Aussies remain unchanged while the Kiwi captain swapped in Seifert for Devon Conway, who was out with a self-inflcicted finger injury

New Zealand started slowly, scoring 57 in the first half of their innings, losing the wicket of Darryl Mitchell, who starred for the Black Caps in their semi-final. However, Kane Williamson charged upon the Australian pace attack scoring 85 (48), anchoring the scoreboard to 172 runs for four wickets. The final ten overs fetched a massive 115 runs. Jose Hazlewood kept his nerves under control to become the most economical bowler for his side, taking three wickets for 16 runs in his four overs.

On the other side, Aaron Finch's poor form continued, as he lost his wicket in the powerplay. David Warner (53) partnered with Mitchell Marsh (77*) to reinforce the chase with 93 runs for the second wicket. Glenn Maxwell's (28*) cameo helped the Australian chase the total comfortably with seven balls to spare.

"This is huge. To be the first Australian team to be able to do it. So proud. We knew our backs were against the wall. We had some great individual performances, some great team performances. Can't believe people wrote him off saying he was done (Warner). That's when he plays his best cricket. Was almost like poking the bear. The player of the tournament for me (Zampa). Mitch Marsh - what a way to start his innings today. Wade coming into this game with an injury cloud but got a job done. Stoinis did the business," the winning captain, Aaron Finch said in the post-match presentation.

"It was perfect, I was able to give myself a few days off before the tournament to freshen up. I was hitting the ball really well, I wasn't required a whole lot. It was nice to be out there and hit the winning runs," said Glenn Maxwell, who scored the winning runs.

Australia have now ended their T20 World Cup drought, adding the title to a cabinet which boasts of five ODI World Cups.
