Yashasvi Jaiswal’s century powers India’s dominance on Day 1 of second Test
It was a show of pomp and vigour from Yashasvi Jaiswal, as the youngster stayed unbeaten for Team India at the end of first day’s play in the second Test, blasting 179 runs from 257 balls. Riding high on his imperious display, the hosts got into a comfortable position at Stumps even though work is still to be done in the first session of Day 2.
Winning the toss, India opted to bat first. Despite Rohit Sharma falling for 14, Shubman Gill did well to stabilize the Indian ship while Jaiswal took over the reins of aggression, condemning the looseners to the fence. Gill fell to James Anderson for a well-orchestrated 34 while Shreyas Iyer chimed in with a crucial cameo too.
Stitching together a 90-run stand with Jaiswal, Iyer got out for 27 while Jaiswal continued his charge. Arriving at No.5, RCB’s Rajat Patidar made his debut and looked good for his 32 before getting out in an unlucky fashion against Rehan Ahmed.
While wickets fell regularly at the other end, Jaiswal continued the charge, anchoring one end for the hosts. Towards the end of day’s play, the southpaw went ballistic and started peppering the cherry frequently to the fence. At the end of day’s play, India managed to garner 336/6 as the opener stayed unbeaten for an extraordinary 179 and will start Day 2 with Ravichandran Ashwin (5*) at the other end for company.
Brief Score:
India – 336/6 (Yashasvi Jaiswal – 179*, Rehan Ahmed – 2/61)
