Women's T20 World Cup spectator diagnosed with COVID-19


In what could further dampen the mood in times of Coronavirus pandemic, Melbourne Cricket Ground Management has confirmed that a spectator, who attended the Women’s T20 World Cup final between Australia and India, has tested positive for novel coronavirus.

With global sporting events either getting canceled or being held behind closed doors, the news is bound to add to already existing concerns around the IPL and ongoing India vs South Africa ODI series.

“The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has advised of the patron’s diagnosis and has classified it as a low-risk of spreading COVID-19 to surrounding members of the public and staff. The patron sat on Level 2 of the Northern Stand at the MCG in section N42,” said The Melbourne Cricket Ground Management in a statement.

The DHHS also recommended that those who were seated in N42 at Sunday’s event should continue to go about their normal routine, with an increased focus on hygiene measures, and should consult a medical professional in case they notice any flu-like symptoms. The authorities added that the risk of the person infecting others in the stand was low.

The final was attended by a record number of spectators as 86, 174 people turned up for the game that saw Australia crush India by 85 runs to win their 5th title.
