Coronavirus plays party pooper in Ranji Trophy final
Much to the concern of sports fans, pandemic CVOID-19 has not spared the world of sports either and with each day situation seems to be getting out hands. From football matches being played behind closed doors to NBA suspending its current season, the global sports finds itself stuck in an unprecedented quagmire.
The latest victim of the viral infection is the Ranji Trophy final between Saurashtra and Bengal. Amid growing number of Coronavirus cases and advisory issued by the health ministry, the fifth day of the final game being played at Rajkot will be held without fans. The match is poised at a crucial juncture, but fans will have to make do with the live telecast of the game.
The statement issued by health ministry reads, “You are advised to adhere to the advisories issued by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and ensure that no public gathering takes place in any sporting event. In the event, the sporting event cannot be avoided, the same could be done without allowing the gathering of people, including spectators.”
Earlier in the day, India was scheduled to play South Africa in the 1st match of the 3-match ODI series in Dharamsala but rain washed out the fixture. In the wake of recent developments, the second ODI in Lucknow is likely to be played behind closed doors.
On the other hand, ambiguity over IPL 2020’s fate remains. There is a special IPL General Council meeting on Saturday after which a call is likely to be taken.
