We just assess and play accordingly – Rohit Sharma on India’s success in World Cup 2023
India continued their unbeaten run in the World Cup as they inflicted a shellacking upon the Proteas that came on the back of an all-round performance from the team. However, it was Rohit Sharma’s early charge that got the job done for India up front, allowing the Men in Blue to score 90 runs from just 10 overs.
The Indian captain smashed a brilliant 40 from just 24 balls before he was dismissed. However, the initial momentum was well utilized by the Indians as Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer propelled the Men in Blue to a decent total.
Rohit opened up at length at the post-match presentation, highlighting how the Men in Blue have turned things around from pretty tricky situations in their last three games. He also lauded his players for putting up such a brilliant show with a clear message on how the Men in Blue plans to approach the upcoming days.
The Indian captain said, “If you look at how we have played in the last three games, we have adapted better. We were put under pressure against England. But we got a decent score and then the seamers did the job. We lost a wicket in the first over. Then got runs and then the seamers did well. We needed Kohli to go out there and play the situation. We then knew we had to keep it in the right areas and let the pitch do the rest.”
Adding further to the praises, Rohit stated, “Even if the faith hadn't been repaid, I would have still stuck to them. We need to keep the trust. It can't be done everyday. For Shami to comeback the way he has, shows the mindset. The last two games have shown what Iyer is capable of. Gill and myself have been batting together for a majority of time now. We let the instincts take over. We don't pre-plan anything. We just assess and play accordingly.”
Raining plaudits on Ravindra Jadeja for his fifer, Rohit added, “Jadeja has been very good for us. Playing in every format over the years. Today was a classical case as to what Jadeja is for us. Came out at the death and scored vital runs. Then picked up wickets. He knows his role and knows the expectations from him.”
He concluded with an important message for Team India, stating, “Not to get too ahead of ourselves has been the talk in the dressing room. Couple of big games are coming up. We don't want to change anything.”
