Virat Kohli becomes the highest run-scorer in the history of T20 World Cups
The King claimed his rightful place at the top of the world as he surpassed Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene to become the highest run-scorer in the history of the T20 World Cup. Getting off to a bumpy start against Bangladesh, Virat took his time to fathom the surface before bringing out the big guns.
He started the T20 World Cup in style, guiding India past Pakistan in a nail-biting thriller at the MCG, smashing a blistering 82, and followed it up with a staggering 62 against Netherlands. Coming out to bat against Bangladesh, he needed 16 runs to get past Mahela Jayawardene’s record of being the highest run-scorer in the history of the showpiece event.
Against Bangladesh, he started off with an uppish cover drive off Taskin Ahmed and then followed it up with a miscued edge which did run away to the ropes without much ado. The early aggression shown by Virat Kohli was India’s response to the untimely departure of Rohit Sharma.
Kohli’s third boundary came against Mustafizur Rahman with a more controlled touch, ushering it through the third man fielder and in the process shattering the record of Mahela Jayawardene to clinch the top of the records table for himself.
