Varun Chakravarthy reflects on three-wicket haul in "challenging Eden Gardens" conditions
Varun Chakravarthy pieced together a magical performance in Kolkata, as his mystery spin proved tough to handle for the England batters, with the spinner registering three big scalps that played a massive hand in India's thumping win in the T20I series opener.
His first wicket of the night was that of Harry Brook, as he sneaked one through the defences and followed it up with the wicket of the big-hitting Liam Livingstone, who was no match for CV Varun’s brilliance either. Varun capped off his fabulous night with the big wicket of Jos Buttler, who mistimed a shot to Nitish Kumar Reddy, who took a fabulous diving catch that removed the England captain.
Winning the Player of the Match award for his sensational performance, CV Varun opened up his familiarity with the Eden Garden surface. He revealed the key plans that he adopted on the night while underlining how bowling in Eden Gardens isn’t the easiest of tasks for any bowler.
Varun Chakravarthy said, “I am used to seeing such pitches in the IPL. I know that it is for the seamers but I know there are certain lengths which is helpful for me. I am trying to keep it away from their arc, it was holding a bit. Every over, bowling in Eden is challenging.”
He further added, “To bowl to batsmen like Jos and other guys is definitely challenging. The last over was very tricky and challenging, but by God's grace I was successful. What I realised was, I can't beat batsmen with side-spin. the only way I can beat the batsmen is through bounce. I'm still 7 on 10, still more work to do.”
