The Yuvi Mania: Yuvraj Singh’s six sixes moment that forever changed the Indo-English rivalry in T20 World Cups
Team India are all set to clash against England in the second semi-final of the 2026 T20 World Cup. This rivalry has aged like fine wine over the years ever since the first iteration of the tournament when the two teams met in Durban.
That particular fixture saw a moment carved by Yuvraj Singh that would stay etched in the memories of Indian fans forever. A heated argument between Yuvraj Singh and Andrew Flintoff was followed by a monstrous striking of the cricket ball and Stuart Broad, unfortunately for him, bore the brunt of the Indian star batter's rage. Before India plays the Three Lions, here’s a quick look at how Yuvraj scripted history in Durban 19 years ago.
India were batting first in that crucial battle and they had to win it to stay alive in the hunt after falling short against the Blackcaps in their previous game. The Men in Blue did get off to a solid start as Virender Sehwag (58) and Gautam Gambhir (68) got them the much-needed fireworks. However, things came to a standstill with the Indian middle-order wobbling.
Yuvraj Singh walked out to bat on the heels of Robin Uthappa getting dismissed. He had 20 balls at his behest and he needed to come up with something massive at least to push India to a formidable total, considering the kind of firepower that England had. Yuvi got off to a strong start smashing three quick fours to get the wheels in motion.
However, the spark lit up when Yuvi clashed with Flintoff just ahead of the penultimate over of the innings. With India stationed at 171/3, they needed a strong finish. Yuvraj took over the reins and dished out a masterclass that no one would ever forget.
It all started with Yuvi parking Stuart Broad over the cow corner. Everyone felt that it was just the immediate spark that flew from the face-off that Yuvi had with Flintoff. However, what they didn’t realise is that it was just the genesis of madness, of power-hitting madness that would leave the entire world gobsmacked once the over was complete.
The following ball from Broad was on Yuvi’s pads, and the southpaw flicked it for a maximum as if he was swatting a fly. Following that was another insane shot over extra-cover and Broad was sweating profusely. The discussions went for a bit longer than usual. India’s scorecard reflected something monumental and the English forces had their task cut out.
The planet stayed witness to Yuvi’s rollicking strength as he smacked Broad again for a fourth consecutive six when he picked the latter’s full-toss and deposited it over backward point. The tensions were high and Broad needed a lot of advice to settle his nerves. But Yuvraj had completely different plans. The fifth ball saw him going down on a knee and smacking Broady over midwicket. This was a huge hit and the anticipation was through the roof. England had no clue what to do next.
The final ball of the over suffered the same fate as the last five as Yuvraj leaned back and hammered Broad over mid-on. The entire world stood up in amazement as history was being carved in Durban. India knew that they had sent themselves soaring through the skies and Yuvraj had made an absolute mockery of Broad.
Over the years, both the sides have collided quite a few times in the history of the tournament but nothing has so far surpassed that incident until now. It will be interesting to see if Yuvraj’s mentee can come up with something crazy tomorrow in Mumbai.
