T20 World Cup organizers explore different scenarios

The T20 World Cup organizing committee is optimistic about the event even as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to force the world to remain inside. However, the committee is also exploring “different scenarios.” Less than seven months remain for the event that is scheduled to happen in Australia.

The ICC, for sometime now, has kept a wait-and-watch strategy over holding of tournaments since the zenith cricket body believes that these are early days to make a final call over the subject.

"We're wanting to give ourselves the best possible chance of going ahead as planned, so there's no imminent or quick decision," said Nick Hockley, chief executive of the T20 World Cup organizing committee. Hockley was interacting with Australian Associated Press (AAP).

"Hopefully it's all resolved and we go ahead. In the event that it isn't completely resolved, we are looking at all the different scenarios. Which is only prudent. They are collective discussions involving the organizing committee, the ICC, all the members. We will keep everyone updated if anything changes. But for now, we're just under seven months away ... we've got a bit of time."

In an ideal scenario, the T20 World Cup, scheduled to start from 18th October 2020, would have just begun after AFL (Australian rule football) and NRL (Rugby) seasons. However, with the latter two tournaments getting postponed, cricket might be seeing a clash with two of the most popular sporting events in Australia.

However, Hockley sounded confident that this will have no impact on how the tournament pans out. "People love a World Cup, cricket is Australia's national sport. We're playing all around the country at venues that are some of the best in the world ... and T20 is the format that appeals to the broadest possible demographic. We're very encouraged already by the take up in terms of ticket sales."
