Sunil Gavaskar defends Team India after WTC result
India’s successful run in international cricket finds itself hitting a roadblock in multi-nation ICC tournaments.
India, who won three ICC tournaments between 2007 and 2013, have managed to come close to grabbing trophies but the final glory has eluded them.
They have been the semifinalists in the 2015 ODI World Cup, 2016 T20 World Cup, and in 2019 ODI World Cup. Last month they ended up being the runners-up in the WTC final, once again giving rise to the usual query – why can’t India emulate their bilateral performances in ICC tournaments?
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar thinks that India may have been a victim of mental blockage during the big ICC tournaments but refuses to believe it was the case once again in the World Test Championship.
"If you look at the last few matches, that seems to be the case. Perhaps there is a mental blockage because of which we are not able to win an ICC title. But about this WTC title, we should remember that the conditions were exactly the ones that New Zealand players face. So, they found it a little easy and that was not the case with India," Gavaskar, a former India captain told Sports Tak.
Gavaskar advised the critics to bear in mind this important fact before going overboard with criticizing the team.
"We should remember that before pointing fingers at our team. Think of the fact that the conditions were like New Zealand and that's what their team took advantage of. That's why they could win the World Test Championship," he added further.
India, who will feature in the 5-Test series against England starting next month, will have another shot at glory later this year in the T20 World Cup. Will they be able to wipe out the mistakes of their recent past?
