Sunil Gavaskar against Team India having an extended support staff

Sunil Gavaskar was definitely not happy with the calls for a separate batting coach for the Indian cricket team and he was increasingly more displeased with the demand of a higher number of coaching staff in the upcoming days of Indian cricket.

The former Indian opener pointed out that the major reason for the Men in Blue to crumble under pressure was because of the excessive workload that they endure throughout a calendar year, simply in terms of the bilateral series. He went a step further and said that the increasing demand of more men in the support staff makes it a lot more confusing for the players.

He further posed a scathing question about why does Team India needs a separate batting coach when Rahul Dravid himself is leading the line for the Men in Blue. Talking to AajTak, Gavaskar said, “In 1983 World Cup, we had one manager. Same in 1985. When the team won in 2011, there weren't many people as well. I'm surprised the number of support staff is higher than the team members. Players get confused on whom to listen.”

He further added, “I don't understand, when you have such a legendary batter like Rahul Dravid, why do you need a batting coach? Dravid says something, and Vikram Rathour says something else, and that leads to confusion. We need to understand how many members we need in the support staff.”

Rahul Dravid will be on a break as India battle New Zealand in the latter’s backyard as VVS Laxman will be supervising the side. Dravid is expected to return to the side alongside the trio of Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma for India’s tour of Bangladesh.
