Something I can be proud of – Glenn Maxwell on his magical knock in World Cup 2023

Wankhede and the cricketing fraternity will never forget a Glenn Maxwell knock that screamed premium destruction, an innings of utmost belief and absolute carnage that blew away the Afghans from an almost ineluctable situation for Australia in World Cup 2023. From knitting together the craziest of shots to fighting the incessant heat and cramps that left him somewhat shackled, Maxi penned history.

Awarded the Player of the Match for a herculean knock that defined time and space, Maxi managed to garner all the energy to talk at length about one of those innings that would go down in history as the finest that has ever been. Not only did he talk about the conditions but he also summed up what he was up against and how he paced that knock of his.

Talking about the cramps, Maxi said, “It was hot while fielding today, I haven't done a lot of exercise in the heat, it got a hold on me today. I wanted to stay back and get some movement (on my legs).”

He also shed some light on the mindset of batting when the score was at 92/7, stating, “Not too much just stick to the batting plans as much as possible, for me, still be positive, still look to play my shots, that LBW, it was going just above (the stumps), probably that made me be more proactive.”

He also highlighted what the knock meant to him, adding, “A hint of swing and nip (off the surface), as it happens here under lights, they bowled beautifully to exploit that. It would have been nice if it was a chanceless knock, but I had my chances, to make the most of it tonight was something I can be proud of.”

Maxi concluded by talking about the mood in the Australian dressing room, stating, “Amazing, after the first two games, people were quick to write us off. The belief was always there (as a team), after today, it would have gone a bit higher.”
