India’s batting display on the fourth day of the Kanpur Test riveted the eyeballs as the hosts showed intense hunger to secure a win at all costs after losing two and a half days to rain.

The opening partnership between Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal that brought up 55 from just 23 balls hammered quite a few records along the way. Apart from the opening stand, Jaiswal’s fireworks also propelled India to a fiery stand that left the visitors in retreat. As India carved their carnage, here is a list of records that they broke along the way.

·      India scored the fastest hundred in a Test innings, racking up the feat within just 10.1 overs bettering their own record against West Indies of 12.2 overs.

·      India chronicled the fastest team fifty in the history of Test cricket. They racked up the feat in 3 overs, leapfrogging England’s 4.2 overs record against West Indies in Nottingham and Birmingham earlier this year.

·      India completed their only fifty across all formats of the game within 20 balls. Their fastest fifty in any format whatsoever before this was from 3.4 overs which also came against Bangladesh in last year’s Asian Games.

·      The fifty-run partnership for the opening stand between Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal is the fastest Test half-century in terms of the run rate, bettering that of Ben Duckett and Ben Stokes, who scored 87 off 44 balls against West Indies in Birmingham at a rate of 11.86.

·      India reached 96 sixes from the eight Test matches that they have played which is the highest number of maximums struck by a team in the longest format of the game in a calendar year. The previous best was of England who blasted 89 sixes in 2022.
