RCB Bold Diaries: Malolan Ranjarajan on his new role with the RCB women’s team and working with varying player availabilities ahead of WPL

A familiar figure in the RCB ranks for a while now is men’s team fielding coach Malolan Rangarajan, who has been watching all the showstoppers take centre stage in front of his watchful eyes. Malolan will be essaying a brand new role for the Women’s Premier League with the dual responsibility of the assistant head coach and head scout of the RCB women’s team.

Malolan was seen putting the squad through the fielding drills and discussing strategies with head coach Ben Sawyer at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Talking on the RCB Bold Diaries about the new role with the women’s team, Malolan said, “I am the fielding coach there (men’s team) and the assistant head coach here. So the responsibilities are slightly different.”

Malolan further added, “Here it is more assisting the head coach, the batting coach and the fielding coach and the bowlers. So my responsibilities are scattered all around and the other part of it is obviously helping our spinners out.”

Speaking about working around players’ availabilities and schedules with only a few days to go for the WPL, Malolan said, “We have been very lucky as RCB has been able to scout well before the auction. So this is a good opportunity for our coaches like Ben, RX (Murali) to have a look at all the uncapped players, understand and appreciate what we have seen in them. With Dane and Erin, both being experienced cricketers, their contribution is massive. They have been talking to the girls and the way they have conducted themselves, it feels great. That is the beauty of what IPL is and what WPL is going to be.”
