On this day in 2001: Sachin Creates History
Today, a glance through the record books of cricket and you will know that 14 international cricketers have gone past the prestigious 10,000-run mark in ODIs. But exactly 19 years ago, the feat was achieved for the first time by a man who would go on to trample records for fun.
On 31st March 2001, Sachin Tendulkar became the 1st man to score 10,000 runs in ODIs. A man of many firsts, Sachin’s record came against then World Champions, Australia, in Indore.
In the 3rd match of the ODI series, Australia opted to field. Having lost Rahul Dravid early in the innings, India’s hopes were pinned to Sachin’s innings. A 125-ball 139 from the batting maestro helped the Men in Blue put 299/8 on the board. Australia succumbed under pressure and were bowled out for 181 inside 36 overs to give India a whopping win by 118 runs.
Sachin’s record came in 259 innings and for more than 17 years, he was the fastest man to 10,000 before RCB and India captain Virat Kohli scored his 10,000 ODI runs in just 205 innings. While Sachin had 28 century when he went past the 10,000-run mark, Kohli had 37.
Interestingly, Kohli also scored a century in the match that he went past 10,000 runs. However, the match ended in a tie against the Windies.
