Mike Hesson Predicted IPL Auction price of Aaron Finch and Chris Morris
Good preparation is half the battle won. RCB’s Director of Cricket Operations, Mike Hesson had proved just that in the recently conducted IPL auctions for 2020.
After releasing as many as 12 players ahead of the new season, RCB think tank needed to nail the auctions to get the right players. But Mike Hesson knew that getting the players he wanted wasn’t going to be easy. He had to stave off the competition from seven other teams, as well as be aware of the purse that RCB had going into the auctions.
Mike Hesson insisted on conducting a series of mock auctions to prepare for the actual one. There were two key players that RCB wanted in their ranks at any cost – Aaron Finch and Chris Morris. Finch is an explosive opener and Australian white ball cricket team captain. And Chris Morris is a handy all-rounder, also a death-over specialist.
In the mock auction, every member of the RCB think tank was assigned an IPL team. In the first round, they had to outbid each other to get Aaron Finch onboard. Eventually, Mike Hesson won the bid at Rs. 4 Crore. It gave the team a fair idea about Finch’s final bid amount. As it turned out, RCB’s winning bid for the Aussie captain in the auction was Rs. 4.4 Crore.
In another round at the mock auction, the teams went hard at each other to get Morris. This was a tough round as everyone knew what value Morris adds to a side. After a close bidding, Mike Hesson dropped out of the mock auction at Rs. 10 Crore citing that’s the tipping point. And that’s exactly the price RCB paid to get Morris in the IPL Auction.
With such a mastermind at the helm of cricketing affairs at RCB, we can certainly look forward to better things in the camp.
