India's triumphant run in the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup marked the beginning of a whole new T20 revolution. The curtain-raiser of the Indian Premier League proved to be a catalyst for the fast-growing T20 format across the globe.

Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Jaques Kallis, Zaheer Khan and Mark Boucher - Royal Challengers Bangalore had some of the greatest ambassadors of the game. However, the Royal Challengers Bangalore did not qualify for the knockouts, but Virat Kohli and Shreevats Goswami were the silver lining of the 2008 campaign. 

IPL 2008 synopsized in numbers 

  • 17,810 runs -  A total of 17,810 runs were scored in the first edition of the Indian Premier League. 
  • 620 sixes and 1887 fours  - A total of 11268 runs came from the boundaries, constituting nearly 63.26% of the total runs.

Win the toss, elect to field first? 

In the 2008 IPL, majority of the captains underlined the preponderance of teams chasing down the total. With a 58.62% win percentage, teams batting second won 34 matches out of a total tally of 59 matches. 

IPL 2008 - Pacers predominate the proceedings 

A total of 689 wickets were taken in the opening season of the cash-rich league. The fast bowling annex constituted 67.77% of the total wickets, accounting for 467 wickets out of 689 wickets.

RCB wicket-keeper batsman, Shreevats Goswami was adjudged 'Emerging Player of the Tournament' in 2008. With 82 runs in 3 innings, the southpaw's half-century against Delhi Daredevils provided a glimpse of his capabilities with the bat. 

2042 runs - With an aggregate of 2042 runs, M.Chinnaswamy Stadium witnessed a cascade of runs in the inaugural edition of IPL. 

59 sixes and 184 fours - Royal Challengers Bangalore amassed a total of 1983 runs, out of which 1090 runs constituted from the boundaries.

375 runs - In 2008 IPL, Rahul Dravid shouldered the RCB batting line-up quite remarkably. With 375 runs in 14 matches, the ace batsman was the leading run-getter for Bengaluru franchise. Pigeonholed as a longer format player, Rahul Dravid's 36-ball 75 against Rajasthan Royals provided a blueprint of his T20 prowess. 

13 wickets - In 2008, Royal Challengers Bangalore roped in Zaheer Khan for a total sum of $450,000. The left-arm pacer accounted for 13 wickets and ended up as the leading wicket-taker for the Bengaluru franchise.
