India run over England in ecstatic show of triumph at Dharamsala
India raged hammer and tongs through England in a lopsided encounter to finish the series in emphatic fashion. Starting Day 3 at 473/8 and a momentous lead of 255 runs, England made quick work of the remaining Indian tail. Kuldeep Yadav fell for 30, imparting a historic pedestal to James Anderson who bagged his 700th international wicket and became only the third bowler to do so.
Bumrah fell in quick succession too as India got bundled out for 477, posting a lead of 259 runs. Shoaib Bashir clinched five wickets while Tom Hartley and James Anderson had a brace each.
With a mountain to climb on the third day while the surface was already starting to spit venom for the batters, India made early inroads as Ravichandran Ashwin sneaked one through the defences of Ben Duckett (0). Ashwin struck again in quick succession as he managed to send Crawley (0) off balance while the latter holed out to Sarfaraz Khan at backward short leg.
England’s woes tripled with Ashwin claiming his third of the day and this time it was Ollie Pope (19) who spooned a top edge into the safe hands of Yashasvi Jaiswal. England managed to knit some resistance through Jonny Bairstow (39) and a warring Joe Root but it should soon fizzle away into oblivion.
Kuldeep Yadav’s introduction proved to get the trick done as he trapped Bairstow in front of the stumps while Ashwin clinched his fourth of the innings, skidding one through the gates of Ben Stokes (2) to continue tormenting the visitors.
Ash continued his mysterious web of dominion with another screaming fifer, this time looping one up for an aggressive Ben Foakes (8) whose untoward hoick saw his poles gatecrashed into shambles.
Trying to fend off the Indian invasion with very little fight remaining in the dugout, Tom Hartley (20) threw everything in his arsenal against the bowlers. However, Jasprit Bumrah found the perfect break for Hartley with a slower one on the off, trapping him leg before wicket.
Prying open the gates of doom for the visitors wide open, Bumrah cannoned one through the defences of Shoaib Bashir (13) to push India one step closer to the finishing line. It was Kuldeep Yadav who put England out of their misery with a tossed up delivery against Joe Root as he holed out to Jasprit Bumrah to finish things off for a resolute 84.
India secured a staggering win by an innings and 64 runs while they clinched the series by a 4-1 margin. Kuldeep Yadav was the Player of the Match for seven wickets and a resolute 30 with the bat while Yashasvi Jaiswal was awarded the Player of the Series for his tally of 712 runs.
