India achieve historic feat after 5-wicket win against Australia in the 1st ODI
India chronicled a fine win against Australia in the series opener as their batters romped past the formidable Aussie bowling unit in a pulsating run chase. After Mohammed Shami's incredible spell of 5/51, India rode high on their batting unit coming together as they chased down the total comfortably.
With a victory in the curtain-raiser, India climbed up to the top of the ICC ODI rankings and in doing so, racked up another massive feat in cricketing antiquity. India edged past their arch-rivals, Pakistan to surge to the pinnacle with a tally of 116 points, one ahead of the latter. Australia stayed rooted to the third spot with 111 points.
As a result of this leap to the top of the rankings, India are now the top ranked team across formats, a massive achievement in the context of world cricket, apart from also playing a role as a massive impetus ahead of India's World Cup campaign. India also became the second team to achieve the feat after South Africa were ranked No.1 across formats in 2012.
Fielding first, India restricted Australia to 276 as Mohammed Shami's fifer was resounding enough to disallow the visitors from putting a tall total on the board. Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad got India the much-needed start while a late flourish from Suryakumar Yadav and KL Rahul helped India across the finish line.
