Ian Chappell reveals what he thinks makes Virat Kohli special
Team India is on the cusp of making the semi-finals in the T20 World Cup as they are only left with one Group Stage encounter where they will be up against Zimbabwe. Virat Kohli has been the main man in their batting unit, leading the Indian battery from the very front.
He is currently the highest run-scorer in the tournament with 220 runs from 4 games, and has been dismissed only once in the tournament. In the wake of his resurgence, former Australian cricketer and commentator, Ian Chappell, rekindled an old memory where Virat told him about his choice of weapons in a battle.
Talking in an interview for Sydney Herald, Chappell said, “We did an interview with Virat Kohli, couple of years ago. It was a magnificent example of talking about the game. When we asked Virat about why don't you use some of the fancy shots, he said, 'I don't want them to creep into my Test game'. That's one of the amazing things about Virat Kohli. He makes all these runs at a very good rate, and he does it with normal cricketing shots.”
He further added, “Few alleviate and get hit into the stands, that doesn't mean it's a slog. As Mark (Taylor) described, off the backfoot, hitting straight, it's a cricket shot, except you don't hit it in the air. But he did, and he did 90 meters.”
Kohli topped Jayawardene in becoming the highest run-scorer in the history of the T20 World Cups during the previous knock against Bangladesh. Kohli also carved a string of classic strikes that entail a straight six against Haris Rauf, and a couple of his signature lofted drives against Netherlands and Bangladesh, underlining his majestic brilliance in the shortest format of the game.
