The defending champions won the toss and elected to bowl first. RCB made three changes to their playing eleven with Wanindu Hasaranga and Navdeep Saini and Tim David making way for Kyle Jamieson, Shahbaz Ahmed, and Dan Christian.

RCB lost Padikkal in the first over, bringing to the crease KS Bharat who stitched a 68-run stand with Virat Kohli. The wicketkeeper-batsman scored 32 (24) before getting dismissed, laying a perfect foundation for Glenn Maxwell.

It was the partnership between Virat and Maxwell which helped the Men in Red put up a decent total on the board. Captain Kohli scored his 42nd IPL half century in the process, while also surpassing the 10,000-run mark in T20s.

In reply, Mumbai got off to a flying start but lost the plot after the loss of Rohit Sharma's wicket. Mr. Purple Patel continued his dream run against MI picking up a 4-fer which included a sensational hat-trick. Harshal Patel became the third RCB bowler to scalp an IPL hat-trick and the second Royal Challenger to claim a hat-trick against the Mumbai Indians after Samuel Badree (2017). Yuzvendra Chahal (3/11), Glenn Maxwell (2/23) and Mohammed Siraj (1/15) were the other bowlers among the wickets.

Eventually, Mumbai Indians fell short by 54 runs, allowing RCB to strengthen their position on the table with 12 points.

Up next, RCB will face the Rajasthan Royals in match 43 of IPL 2021 at the Dubai International Stadium on Wednesday, September 29.
