BCCI introduces three new rules ahead of IPL 2025

With the IPL 2025 set to commence in under 24 hours, BCCI announced a handful of new rules ahead of the tournament. Ahead of the season beginning, three new rules were announced which will all come to play throughout this edition of the IPL.

Here are the three new rules introduced by BCCI ahead of IPL 2025:

Saliva ban revoked

There was a massive furor during the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy about the ban of saliva. What came on as an initial precaution to avert the dissemination of the Covid-19 virus was soon made permanent all across the globe. After five staggering years, this rule is all set to be removed in the IPL, considering the fact that the league operates under its own set of regulations, thereby allowing bowlers an extra bit of leeway to keep the ball as shiny as possible using the saliva in order to regulate lateral movement in the game, even in the middle-overs.

‘Conditional’ second new ball in 2nd innings in the night games

The evening matches have formerly shown a trend of heavy dew, thereby making life a living nightmare for the bowlers. Going by this rule, if the on-field umpires deem that the dew is excessive, then a new ball will be introduced from the 11th over of the second innings. This rule, however, is not applicable for the afternoon games.

DRS for wides

In the preceding edition of IPL, DRS was allowed for waist-high no balls. The latest tweak would now include off-side and height wides in the assessment range, thereby imparting a better short to the batters to try and contest the legality of the ball if they feel that there is a chance to overturn the decision of the on-field umpires.
