AUS vs IND: Captain Kohli on verge of a Virat record

Every ODI that India play, there is a record up for grabs for the Indian skipper Virat Kohli. When the Men in Blue take field against Australia in the 3rd ODI in Canberra on Wednesday, Virat Kohli will be on the verge of another milestone.

While India lost the series after losing the second game in Sydney, Kohli showed signs of returning to form with an enthralling innings of 89. Kohli now has the chance to go past Sachin Tendulkar in becoming the fastest cricketer to 12,000 ODI runs.

He is just 23 runs shy off the record. If he manages to do so, he would reach the mark in his 251st ODI, and 242nd innings. Sachin Tendulkar reached 12,000 runs in 309 matches and 300 innings.

If he manages to get to the milestone, Kohli will become the 6th player overall and only the second India in the history of the game to do so. Apart from Sachin, Australia’s Ricky Ponting, and Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara, Sanath Jayasuriya and Mahela Jayawardene have scored 12,000 or more runs in ODIs.

Not just runs, Kohli will have another record in sight against the Aussies. If he scores a hundred, the Indian skipper will equal Sachin’s record of most hundreds by an Indian (9) against Australia.
