Anil Kumble calls for separate teams for all three formats for Team India
Despite crashing out of the T20 World Cup after a crushing defeat at the hands of England in the semis, Anil Kumble is clear about the fact that no other team other than India has such depth in all formats of the sport.
India started their T20 World Cup campaign on a high after pipping Pakistan in a thriller in the first game. They carried on the rampage throughout the group stages with a solitary defeat coming at the hands of South Africa. However, things went horribly wrong in the semis.
After India’s shock defeat in the semis, Anil Kumble has expressed that India should go for three different teams for the three separate formats of the sport, owing to the overwhelming depth that the Men in Blue now possess.
Talking to ESPNCricinfo, Kumble said, “Definitely, you need separate teams. You need, certainly, T20 specialists. I think what this English team has shown and even the last (T20) World Cup champions Australia have shown is that you need to invest in a lot of allrounders. Look at the batting order."
He further added, “Today Liam Livingstone is batting at No. 7. No other team has a No. 7 of the quality of Livingstone. (Marcus) Stoinis walks in at No. 6 (for Australia). That’s the kind of team you have to build. That’s something that you need to invest in."
He concluded by focusing on India’s leadership, stating, “I’m not really sure whether you need a different captain or a different coach. It all depends on what team you are going to pick and then choose how you want to build the support and the leadership around it.”
