I look to tackle it my own way at the start – Shubman Gill

India had an early stutter against Sri Lanka in the World Cup 2023 clash that saw them losing their skipper for just four runs as Dilshan Madushanka produced an absolute ripper to send Rohit Sharma’s off stump cartwheeling. However, the joys were short-lived for the Sri Lankans as Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli took over the reins of the Indian innings and steered them initially to safety before firing on all cylinders.

Shubman Gill was the aggressor who first turned the heat up against the visitors, peppering the cherry to every nook and cranny of the park. He posted a scintillating 92 before eventually falling against Madushanka trying to slash hard at him in an attempt to come closer to his century.

Talking to the broadcasters post this fixture, Gill expressed his happiness with the knock that he forged with precision and grit while also lauding Shreyas Iyer for playing an instrumental role in defining the innings for India in the middle-order.

Gill said, “The way they were bowling we were anticipating wickets. Siraj is always fired up. They were sensational. Has made job easier for us. I am the kind of person who doesn’t get nervous. I look to tackle it my own way at the start. Not full fitness. I am four kilos down from dengue in terms of mass and muscle weight.”

He also talked about how he failed to convert the starts that he got in the tournament, adding, “Honestly the discussion was to play in a compact manner. The odd ball was seaming. Hit the balls in our areas. You couldn’t get into a shell. Looked to put the pressure on the bowlers. I felt in the previous matches I got starts except the last one.”

Gill concluded by talking about the match in entirety, stating, “Sometimes you play a good shot and it goes to the fielder. We thought about rotating the strike today. I honestly don’t think it was a 400 wicket. We batted well to get 350. Shreyas was the key today. He batted superbly.”
