You have to be very nimble on your feet: Sanjay Bangar explains RCB’s Auction strategy

RCB seemed all pumped up before the auction and ever since the gavel started dropping, with a few big names doing the rounds, the Royal Challengers went head-on, without considering the latter part of the day. Despite failing to register the top names, considering the financial restraints, they ensured that they were being noticed in the auction war room.

RCB head coach, Sanjay Bangar explained the entire strategy behind raising the paddles up early on the day despite having to wait for a while before they could register the first name. Bangar explained how the move was linked to getting themselves an all-rounder, which can be a value addition to the side, especially considering the new Impact Player Rule in place.

Bangar said, “Those are all-rounder players. We went for all-rounders because we knew that if at all there was going to be a bargain buy or if you had to get lucky, we would have wanted to have a player of that quality because he could bat and bowl which would have taken care of our bowling requirements as well.”

The RCB gaffer further added, “So we always had a couple of other options coming down, if we could have secured one of them, it could have been a low-cost option and that’s how you sort the planning for auction. You have to be very nimble on your feet, nimble in your thinking, how you are going to strategise and how you are going to mix and match.”

RCB did go onto buy a crucial all-rounder in Will Jacks who has always been touted as a star in the making and that move was straddled by the roping in of a few youngsters who could come in handy in the forthcoming seasons given RCB’s strategy of nurturing Indian youth.
