Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jasprit Bumrah headline second day of India-England 2nd Test

Yashasvi Jaiswal notched up his maiden Test double hundred after starting Day 2 of the Test on an overnight score of 179*, following which Jasprit Bumrah’s 6-fer restricted England to just 253 in their first innings, and riding on the duo’s starry performances, India went into Stumps with a healthy lead of 171.

Jaiswal walked out to the middle with Ravichandran Ashwin (6*) for company, and the youngster started cautiously, before switching gears after the latter’s dismissal for 20. The dynamic southpaw swept Shoaib Bashir for a six over square leg and followed it up with another strong sweep for four to get to the double century in style, making him the third youngest double centurion for India in Test cricket.

However, he could only add eight more runs to the total before he was dismissed for a terrific 209-run knock, and the Indian tail failed to add much to the total as the hosts were bowled out for 396 on what promised to be a good batting track.

The England opening duo of Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley started off in grand fashion, collecting boundaries at will as they put on a 59-run stand, before the left-hander was removed by Kuldeep Yadav.

England’s Hyderabad hero Ollie Pope joined forces with Crawley, and the two of them added 55 runs, only for the latter had to depart for a well-made 76 after Shreyas Iyer took a splendid running catch at point.

Crawley’s departure was followed by a magical performance from Bumrah, who brought out his full bag of tricks to trouble the visitors. The pacer not just eked an edge off Joe Root’s (5) bat, but he produced arguably one of the best ever yorkers seen in world cricket to send Pope (23) packing. Jonny Bairstow (25) too fell to Bumrah’s guile as he edged to Shubman Gill at first slip, and the pacer also brought an end to Ben Stokes’ stubborn resistance, knocking back the England captain’s off stump, much to an animated response from the southpaw.

Hartley’s attempt to score some quick runs came to an abrupt end as he too was sent back by Bumrah, with the icing on the cake being the star pacer’s 6th wicket in the form of a plumb LBW call that went his way after James Anderson was pinned in front of the stumps.

India’s openers walked out with a lead cushion of 143 runs, and at Stumps after five overs of batting, Jaiswal (15*) and Rohit (13*) remained unbeaten, with a few glorious boundaries scored between the pair.
