Why Michael Hussey is impressed by Virat Kohli
By his own admission, Virat Kohli was overwhelmed when the baton of India’s Test leadership was passed to him post MS Dhoni’s retirement in 2014. A few years later Dhoni stepped down from the ODI captaincy too, leading to Kohli becoming India’s captain across the three formats.
Ever since Dhoni has continued to be a guiding force behind the wickets for the team and Virat Kohli appears more than happy to turn to the ex-captain for advice and inputs during the game. While having the ex-captain still around can appear threatening to others, Virat Kohli appears at ease with the presence of Dhoni in the team. Former Australia batsman Michael Hussey seems all praise for the Indian skipper for the way he has managed the captaincy and his equation with MSD.
“I think you got to give a lot of kudos to Virat Kohli, having someone like MS Dhoni still in the team who’s been, arguably, India’s most successful captain. Sometimes some people would find that threatening to still have that person in the team,” Hussey during Sony Ten’s Pit Stop on Sony India’s Facebook page.
“But I think that’s where you need to tip your hat to Virat and so you know he’s obviously got the personality to say ‘no, no I would like this guy around. I can learn from this guy, and he’s going to help me get down the better skipper and obviously have a better team’,” Hussey added further said.
Dhoni was last seen in action during the World Cup 2019 and has been on a sabbatical since then. The 38-year-old was set to return to action with the IPL but COVID-19 delayed his plans.
