When cricketers suffered some bizarre injuries off the field
England wicketkeeper Ben Foakes’s recent injury is not the first time a cricketer has had a freak one. Foakes slipped in the dressing room at the Oval in socks during a drawn county game against Middlesex last week, tearing his hamstring. Now the Englishman may miss the series against India and is even a little doubtful for the Ashes.
We take a look at five most bizarre injury incidents involving cricketers.
Matthew Hayden
Matthew Hayden’s leisurely jog turned out to be lethal when a stray dog chased him and bit his ankle, causing a five-cm-deep gash. Hayden recovered soon to play for Australia but is not that an uncanny way to be ruled out of action?
Jimmy Adams
Veteran West Indies cricketer Jimmy Adams suffered an injury on a flight. While he was on a flight to South Africa, he cut through his right hand while slicing bread. The accident meant that he had to miss matches on the tour.
Chris Old
Among all the bizarre ways of getting injured, this has to rank at the top. Chris Old was known for his injuries. He once had to sit out of a Test match as he broke a rib after sneezing. Could life be more unfair?
Glenn McGrath
Glenn McGrath was bowling like dream in 2005 but when Australia reached Edgbaston, he ran out of luck. The Australian team were warming up by playing a game of touch rugby when McGrath stepped on the stray ball and tore a few ligaments in his right ankle. He was out of the rest of the series, England won the Test and the series.
Jofra Archer
Archer is scheduled to go under the knife to treat his elbow. Earlier this year, he was trying to clean the fish tank at home, dropped it and glass splinters cut his hand. The pacer had to go for minor surgery to remove shattered glass pieces.
