We wanted to put up a show, and we did that well: Rohit Sharma
India will be walking into the T20 World Cup in less than a month’s time and the series against Australia highlighted various strengths and weaknesses of the Indian team. India’s batting might was on full display in all the 3 games, while death bowling proved to be a major point of concern.
Rohit Sharma spoke at length in the post-match conference where he was clear about his vision and his feelings after the important series win against Australia. He highlighted that the win was a boost for India’s spirits and shed light upon why India will have to get their homework done properly before they depart for the land of the 'Roos as the showpiece event awaits.
Talking about the victory in the final T20I against the Aussies, Rohit said, “It was a great occasion. We wanted to put up a show, and we did that well. The biggest positive was different individuals stepping up with the ball and bat. When you are sitting back and watching all of that happening, you feel nice as management. Sometimes you can err in doing a lot of things. This is T20 cricket, and the margins of error are very small. I thought we took our chances, we were brave. Sometimes it didn't come off, but that is a learning we will take.”
The Indian skipper also spoke about the areas of concern for the Men in Blue as in less than two days they will be up against the touring Proteas which would be another crucial challenge. Despite some terrific batting, their bowling skills were placed under the radar, especially with the big guns of the bowling unit faltering ahead of Australia.
“There are a lot of areas, particularly, our death bowling coming to the party. Those two (Harshal and Bumrah) who came in are coming after a long time. Knowing their (Australia's) middle and lower order is tough to bowl at. Don't really want to look into that. They are coming after a break, they will take time. Hopefully, they can get back in the groove,” Sharma said.
India will be playing a 3-match T20I series against South Africa followed by a 3-match ODI affair that will be the last preparatory chapter for the Indians ahead of the upcoming showpiece event slated to be played from late October, Down Under.
