We have to be street smart – Morne Morkel opens up on India’s blueprint against Sri Lanka
India will face Sri Lanka in the first Test starting from tomorrow in Galle. A challenge for the Indian bowling unit might be bowling with the Kookaburra ball, whose seam tends to wear faster than the SG ball India uses back home.
Also, for India, apart from Mohammed Siraj, the rest of the fast-bowling unit hasn’t got as much as experience. India’s bowling coach, Morne Morkel, shed some light on the visitors' preferred length while outlining a tactic the seamers can use extensively.
Morkel said, “Even in our playing days, I thought if you hit the deck hard here you are asking lots of questions on a good length, you're always in the chance of picking up results. When the ball goes soft, what is our next step? We have to be street smart in terms of how we're going to use the crease or how we're going to use our short ball. We need to be able to do some of that quite quickly."
He further added, “I think reverse swing can definitely play a role here if teams can get the ball to reverse. This morning we had quite a big shower, so that can make the outfield a little softer and the ball does take longer to reverse."
