Virat Kohli on the cusp of breaking yet another captaincy record
Virat Kohli will be scripting yet another record when he steps onto the field in the 4th Test against England in Ahmedabad. The India skipper, who has thus far captained India in 59 matches, will equal a record currently held by MS Dhoni. The latter holds the record of leading Team India in most Test matches. In addition to this, Kohli is already India's most successful Test captain with 35 victories.
Most matches as captain for India in Test cricket
Captain | Total Matches | Win % |
MS Dhoni | 60 | 45 |
Virat Kohli | 59 | 59.32 |
Sourav Ganguly | 49 | 42.85 |
M Azharuddin | 47 | 29.78 |
Sunil Gavaskar | 47 | 19.14 |
Talking of win percentage, the current India captain has the highest win percentage (59.32) among the other Indian captains. His captaincy career for India kickstarted in an eventful Test series against Australia in 2014. From leading India to a first series victory in Australia to claiming ICC Test championship mace for three successive years, the 32-year-old has done a commendable job in marshaling his troops over the years.
Records just seem to tumble whenever he comes to the batting crease. Come Thursday, he will be chasing yet another record. If the talismanic batsman manages to score a century in the last Test, he would be eclipsing Ricky Ponting to record most centuries by a captain in Test cricket. The legendary Aussie batsman and Virat Kohli are currently tied at 41 centuries.
