Very proud: Smriti Mandhana in awe of Kanika Ahuja’s valiant effort that propelled RCB to maiden win in WPL 2023
Eventually, after a handful of attempts where RCB came very close and yet had to finish miles away from the finish line, Smriti Mandhana and company bagged the bragging rights of a tie for the first time as they outclassed the UP Warriorz Women emphatically.
It was a combined show of youth and experience as a young Kanika Ahuja (30-ball 46, 8x4, 1x6) displayed her prowess of keeping calm under the pump and delivering the payload while Ellyse Perry (4-0-16-3) troubled the batters with the ball, bagging three crucial wickets that dented the Warriorz’ batting effort.
Smriti Mandhana, the RCB captain, was appreciative of the fact that the young guns of the team fired exactly when it was needed and in the face of enormous pressure, they were clinical with their execution as they finally managed to cross the finish line and bag the first points of the tournament.
Talking at the post-match conference, Smriti Mandhana said, “We were tensed but Kanika and Richa's stand got us through. Very proud of Kanika. I think the camera showed I was nervous initially and we had to get a win at least today.”
She also heaped praises on how brilliant of a knock was played by Kanika Ahuja, adding, “Kanika and Richa played really well. Kanika's approach is brilliant. Indian players are more technical but her flair was brilliant to see.”
The fans were there till the end and they didn’t hesitate to scream their hearts out as they wanted the Challengers to get off the block. Lauding their vociferous support, Smriti said, “Big thanks to the loyal supporters, they were supporting even when they weren't in great positions. This one's for them.”
