Throwback to Glenn Maxwell’s special 154* knock in the BBL as he leads Melbourne Stars in a new season
As the latest edition of Big Bash League kickstarts from today, the two contenders that will be seen in action are Melbourne Stars, led by RCB’s very own Glenn Maxwell, and Brisbane Heat. Maxi will be eager to rack up some serious form in Australia’s premier franchise tournament which will be a major catalyst ahead of the upcoming IPL that is to be tentatively played in April and May.
Before Maxi storms the yard again and this time in a green thread that he has very proudly donned in the BBL, here’s a look back at the frenzy that took Melbourne by storm on 19th January 2022 as Maxwell went berserk, chronicling the highest score in the history of the tournament.
In a season where things went terribly wrong for the Stars, they were up against Hobart Hurricanes who were slightly ahead of them in the points table. It was the 56th match of the contest and the Hurricanes deemed it fit to field first on a surface that definitely had some assistance for the bowlers early on.
Joe Clarke started off on a feisty note for the Stars while Maxwell had a few early jitters that needed some shaking off. He played out the first five balls before eventually announcing his intention of going for slaughter as he rocked Matthew Short over long-on with an exquisite hoick.
He followed the boundary with a maximum, rocking back in the crease and clobbering Short over long-on. This was just the overture to an unprecedented onslaught. Sandeep Lamichhane, who was labelled as a promising youngster to watch out for, was wrecked by the Show mercilessly as he slammed 16 runs in the following over.
Maxi eventually stayed unbeaten for 154 from just 64 balls, propelling the Stars to a staggering 273/2, a record total in the BBL while clubbing 22 fours and four sixes throughout his innings.
