The level of detail is unbelievable – Phil Salt on what makes Andy Flower an impeccable coach
One of the major driving factors behind RCB’s second consecutive title was Head Coach, Andy Flower.
The Zimbabwean legend completed his third season with the side and in all three seasons, RCB managed to qualify for the Playoffs.
In his first IPL season as the coach of the side, RCB staged a miraculous turnaround from the very jaws of elimination to make the cut for the play-offs. However, in the following two years, they went all the way.
Phil Salt, who has also played a significant role for RCB at the top of the order, opened up on how incredible the RCB coach is.
Praising Andy Flower, Salt said, “The level of detail is unbelievable. I think I've heard enough Andy Flower stories now just being involved with England. The Ashes that they won Down Under, when they went to number one test team in the world, that was planned out, I think, it was about a year and half in advance.”
Salt further added, “The whole thing, how it would, the level of detail with Andy is ridiculous to the point where you'll go in meetings and he might ask you he's not going to tell you what to say but he'll come to you before the meeting and say Carlos (Braithwaite – he was also a part of the podcast) I want you to speak today because he's already taken the time to understand, he knows what Carlos is going to say about any certain topic because he knows each player individually and what makes them tick.”
Citing an example of Andy’s understandings, Salt continued, “There was a meeting where he just nailed it and he asked Virat (Kohli) to speak, Timmy (David) to speak, myself to speak and Krunal Pandya to speak and it was about how we're going to finish out the rest of the IPL and obviously myself and Timmy spoke quite aggressively. This is what we're going to do.”
Revealing what Krunal Pandya had to say, Salt stated, “This is how we're going to march it forward and then KP spoke last in the meeting and coming from his point of view which was the exact opposite of everything we just said. It was the reminder that you know guys we actually do have a bit of margin as well. We're not in the phase where we have to do this right we have margin for error. So just that instances like that with that sort of knowledge of players and the ability to set it up in the room to get his message across in the best way possible um is second to none.”
