Be it Virat Kohli’s iconic celebration pointing at the 7 stitches in his hand, or the Ronaldo celebration by Chris Gayle, the fixture has produced some unforgettable moments. We look at 10 pieces of records and trivia in the lead up to the clash between the two teams.
138 - RCB inflicted the heaviest defeat by runs in Kings XI Punjab’s IPL history. In the 2015 season, playing at the Chinnaswamy, a Chris Gayle century propelled RCB to a score of 226 before 4-wicket hauls by the two left-arm seamers - S Aravind and Mitchell Starc - destroyed the Kings XI batting lineup, condemning them to a 138-run defeat. At the time, the win was also the biggest in RCB’s history which the team went on to better by 6 more runs in 2016 against the Gujarat Lions.
71 - The largest defeat in terms of balls to spare in KXIP’s history was also inflicted by RCB. A fiery spell of fast bowling by Umesh Yadav broke the back of KXIP batting who were dismissed for only 88. Virat Kohli and Parthiv Patel made sure the chase was unblemished and knocked off the 89 runs with 71 balls still left.
204/2 - After Kings XI Punjab put up a formidable 203 runs on the board, a run-chase anchored by Jacques Kallis, and quick-fire knocks from Bangalore lads Manish Pandey and Robin Uthappa took the team within sniffing distance of a victory before Virat Kohli joined Kallis to register the highest-ever run-chase in RCB’s history, a record which still stands to this day.
29 - Umesh Yadav holds the record for the most number of wickets taken against KXIP in IPL history. Playing for 3 teams - the Delhi Daredevils, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Royal Challengers Bangalore, Umesh Yadav has dismissed 29 KXIP batsmen.
147 - Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli’s 147-run stand in 2016 at the Chinnaswamy is the highest partnership for any wicket against KXIP in IPL history. Kohli went on to score his fourth century of the tournament, a feat that is yet to be repeated.
113 - Virat’s 113 off 50 balls in the 2016 season at the Chinnaswamy against KXIP is the only century ever to be scored in IPL history in a rain-curtailed game.
121 - The highest 5th wicket partnership in RCB’s history came against Kings XI in 2019 at the Chinnaswamy. AB de Villiers and Marcus Stoinis put together 121 runs off only 66 balls. The stand is also the highest ever 5th wicket partnership against KXIP in IPL history.
4/14 - Best ever figures by a fast bowler for RCB belongs to S Aravind. The spell of 4/14 came against KXIP in 2011. Aravind is also the only fast bowlers with more than one 4 wicket haul for RCB, both of them coming against Punjab.
3 - Three RCB bowlers feature in the top 6 list of best bowling averages against KXIP. S Aravind stands at 3rd with 12.63, Starc comes in at 4th with 13.28, Chahal ranks 6th with 16 (Minimum 12 overs).
160.75 - AB De Villiers’s strike rate of 160.75 is the third-highest for any batsman against KXIP. De Villiers also averages 52.3 against the team from Punjab in 21 innings.
