After Harmanpreet Kaur’s decision to step down from India captaincy, BCCI have appointed Smriti Mandhana as the new India women's captain. Mandhana, who served as the deputy to Harman for a considerable period of time, has led India in four ODIs and 18 T20Is so far.

Apart from her captaincy stint for India, she has also led the Royal Challengers Bengaluru for the past four WPLs, winning the trophy twice. In the domestic circuit, Smriti also captains the star-studded Maharashtra.

Mandhana's first test as the India captain will be the limited-overs series against Zimbabwe, featuring three T20Is slated to be played in Raipur from October 16th.

In BCCI's press release announcing Smriti's captaincy, she acknowledged the responsibility, saying, "To be given the responsibility of leading India is a very special honour. Representing India has always meant a great deal to me, and to now have the opportunity to lead the team is something I will value deeply. I am grateful to the BCCI, the selectors, my teammates and everyone who has supported me throughout my journey and for the trust they have placed in me."

She further added, "I would also like to acknowledge Harmanpreet and the contribution she has made as captain over the years. She has led the team with great commitment and has been an important part of our journey."

Mandhana concluded by talking about how she wants to take a step forward, stating, "I understand the responsibility that comes with this role and look forward to working with the team, learning along the way and giving my best to take Indian Cricket forward.”
