Shubman Gill leads the charge for India on Day 3 as India post 399-run target for England to chase
The third day of the second Test of the five-match series saw Stumps being called on an even footing, with England chasing 332 runs to go 2-0 up in the series while India will be looking for nine more wickets to level scores at 1-1, with two days of play left.
India got off to a sloppy start as they lost Rohit Sharma early in the day, after the openers walked in with the overnight score on 28/0. To make matters worse for the hosts, the hero of the first innings, Yashasvi Jaiswal fell in quick succession too. It was the third wicket stand between Shreyas Iyer (29) and Gill that saw India stabilize the ship.
Despite the fall of Iyer against Tom Hartley, Gill continued the charge. Rajat Patidar couldn’t add too many runs to the board either as he fell for nine in the second innings.
It was Axar Patel who provided the much-needed support to Gill with an excellent 45 from 84 balls. The duo added 89 runs for the fifth wicket before the latter fell for an excellent 104. Despite Ravichandran Ashwin’s dogged 29, India were bowled out for 255, posting a target of 399 runs to win for England.
The English openers got off to a flying start as Zak Crawley stayed unbeaten for 29 while Ben Duckett looked in solid touch for his excellent 28, before Ashwin removed the southpaw. At the end of day’s play, England were stationed at 67/1, still needing 332 runs to win.
