Shreyas Iyer to lead India as BCCI announce squad for Ireland and England T20Is
Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the new Indian T20I captain, replacing Suryakumar Yadav, as the BCCI announced the Indian squad for the upcoming series against Ireland and then England. The squad also includes teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who earned his first national team call-up after a spectacular run in the Indian Premier League.
Apart from the inclusions of Shreyas Iyer and Sooryavanshi, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Prince Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi were also called up for the upcoming T20I series lined up for the Men in Blue. Due to the new inclusions, players like Rinku Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah were rested.
India’s tour of Ireland and England is their first venture in the shortest format of the game after their T20 World Cup triumph in March. Shreyas Iyer will be returning to T20Is after December 2023. With the experience of leading Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings, Iyer’s captaincy will be an exciting prospect to look forward to for the Indian fans.
Sooryavanshi became the youngest Indian to be selected since Sachin Tendulkar in the late 1980s. His blockbuster IPL season, where he claimed the Orange Cap with 776 runs was a major reason for his inclusion in the national side. The selectors also announced the India A squad for the four-day games in Sri Lanka that will follow India’s outing in England.
India will be playing Ireland in a couple of T20Is slated to be played on June 26th and 28th. This will be followed by five T20Is in England which will be played from July 1st to 11th.
