Rain reigns supreme in Gabba as India and Australia share spoils in Brisbane
It was the Rain Gods who had the last laugh in Gabba as the third Test between India and Australia saw the two teams drawing the game. Despite a rollicking display from the Indian bowlers, the heavens refused to relent and by the end of it all, the two teams could only watch such a thrilling platform sail away.
India started the day at 252/9 and Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah extended their resistance by another 18 runs before Australia could finally get the better of the former. Deep was stumped for 31 while Bumrah stayed unbeaten on 10. With a staggering lead of 185, Australia came out to bat but were jolted to a rude awakening by the Indian fast-bowlers. The trio of Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep drove the visitors to the very edge, leaving them teetering at a precarious juncture. Bumrah struck first to get the better of Usman Khwaja (8) followed by the precious wicket of Marnus Labuschagne (1) in very short succession.
Akash Deep joined the party too as he removed Nathan McSweeney (4) to help India assert further dominion over the Aussies. Mitchell Marsh (2) was the next to fall as the visitors had a more intense sniff at an Aussie collapse. Despite Alex Carey (20*) and Pat Cummins (22) building a decent head of steam for Australia, the Indian bowlers were absolutely ruthless as they reduced their counterparts to 89/7 before the declaration came.
With 275 needed to win, India definitely fancied their chances. Sadly enough for the cricket fans across the globe and the two teams hoping to post a spicy and oscillating showdown, the heavens cracked open and the rains had no intentions of slowing down as the officials were compelled to make the hard call and abandon the rest of the day’s play to call it a stalemate.
Heading into the 4th Test in Melbourne, India and Australia are level 1-1, with two matches to go in the five-match series.
