Pace vs Spin - who rules at M. Chinnaswamy?

IPL, the two-month-long cricketing extravaganza, is less than 20 days away and preparations are already at their peak. The franchises have done their homework trying to formulate different permutations and combinations in order to win the silverware.

Spin vs Pace – this is always a debatable topic as far as T20 format is concerned. In the early days of T2Os, numerous cricket pundits predicted that the art of spin bowling would lose its importance in the shortest format of the game. However, reality turned out to be entirely different.

The best T20 sides around the globe have worked out that the key to success in T20 cricket is spin-bowling. The shortest formats of the game are all about keeping the batsman guessing which eventually cuts down the scoring rate. From “doosras” to “googlies,” the spinners have managed to find a way out to bamboozle the batsmen.

The numbers at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in the IPL

With short boundaries at the M.Chinnaswamy, the batsmen are expected to make life miserable for the bowlers. However, it comes as a surprise that as many as five spinners feature in the top ten of the 'most number of dots balls bowled' in the IPL. Quite clearly, the spinners have proved to be quintessential because of their ability to provide the breakthroughs on crucial occasions.

Yuzvendra Chahal

RCB's Yuzvendra Chahal is the highest wicket-taker with 50 wickets at an economy rate of 7.78 at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in the IPL. Yuzi's numbers are a testimony to the fact that spin continues to be the most sought-after strategy used by teams at this venue. In IPL 2019, pacers bowled a total of 149 overs and conceded 1445 runs at an economy rate of 9.65, while the spinners, who bowled close to 95 overs, were fairly economical at 7.97.

Traditionally, spinners have led the charge at RCB's home ground. In the last two years of the IPL, the spinners have been more economical than the pacers.

This should put the age-old 'Pace vs Spin' debate to rest for now at least. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
