One of the greatest Wimbledon finals ever – Cricketing fraternity reacts to Carlos Alcaraz’s historical title win
History was created last night in the Centre Court of All England Club in southwest London as Carlos Alcaraz heroically punched above his weight to outclass a living legend in Novak Djokovic in the men’s singles final of Wimbledon 2023. Deemed as the holy grail of lawn tennis, this year’s Wimbledon saw countless twists and turns which eventually culminated with an unlikely Alcaraz and Djokovic face-off in the summit clash.
It was a dream run for both men as they powered their way to the final with one masterclass after the other. The Spaniard Alcaraz laid waste to Jeremy Chardy in the opening round followed by victories against Alexandre Muller and Nicolas Jarry to make it to the round of 16. He snuffed out M Berrettini with extreme prejudice after a defeat in the first set to head to the quarters.
It all seemed too easy for the eventual champion as Holger Rune was the next victim in line to his bedazzling supremacy as he set himself up for a semi-final date with Daniil Medvedev. Beating Medvedev in three straight sets, Alcaraz punched his ticket to the final.
The Serbian icon, Novak Djokovic started with a victory against Argentine Pedro Cachin and followed it up with wins against Jordan Thompson and Stanislas Wawrinka to make it to the round of 16. Brushing aside Hubert Hurkacz and Andy Rublev in consecutive rounds, he got himself a berth in the semi-final where he was awaited by Jannik Sinner.
Joker rode roughshod over Sinner as he dished out a winning performance that read 3-6, 3-6 and 6-7 in a pulsating semi-final, sailing hammer and tongs to the grand finale of Wimbledon 2023. In an epic finale, Djokovic and Alcaraz went head on for each other’s jugular as the ball kept on rattling from one end to the other as the public watched on in utter adulation.
Joker clinched the first set without breaking a sweat, smashing Alcaraz 1-6. However, in another thrilling second set that needed a tie-breaker to produce a winner, it was the Spaniard who restored parity. Alcaraz went up in the game with another sizzling third set as he rampaged over Djokovic by 6-1. Knowing the eternal fighter that Novak always has been, he came back with a rock-solid display in the fourth set, seizing it by 3-6.
As it all boiled down to the final set of the tournament, both the players went all in and after a feisty trade of haymakers, it was the Spaniard who would carve history in golden letters, announcing his arrival to the grandest stage of all with a humdinger victory against one of the finest men that tennis has ever seen.
A sport that has always been respected by every fraternity around the world saw their cricketing counterparts pouring in with their congratulatory tweets for the rising youngster, Carlos Alcaraz, who pulled off what one would remember as a historic chapter in the glistening antiquity of Wimbledon. Here are a few tweets from cricketers congratulating Alcaraz on his famous win against Djokovic.
