On this day - RCB bowlers run riot at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium
Royal Challengers Bangalore started off the campaign with a comprehensive win against the Delhi Daredevils; in the process, the side unearthed a new talent in the form of Yuzvendra Chahal. Next up, they faced a formidable Mumbai Indians outfit at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
The RCB bowlers employed a relentless approach with the new ball
Earlier in the day, RCB won the all-important toss and asked Mumbai Indians to bat first. The pair of Aditya Tare and Micheal Hussey faced some tough questions with the tight and nagging lines bowled by the RCB bowlers.
However, Mumbai Indians lost Michael Hussey off the bowling of Albie Morkel inside the first six overs. Aditya Tare, with able support from Ambati Rayudu, launched a counter-attack to deflate the RCB bowlers. The pair managed to abrogate the damage with the scorecard reading 51 for 1 in 6 overs. Varun Aaron returned to bowl the seventh over and dished out a short-pitched delivery which saw Aditya Tare holing out to the deep midwicket fielder.
Yuzvendra Chahal - The breakthrough provider
Yuzvendra Chahal, introduced into the attack in the 8th over, smothered the run-rate and perfectly set up Rohit Sharma to induce a false shot. Keiron Pollard joined Ambati Rayudu in an attempt to dig MI out of the hole, the duo had orchestrated innumerable come-from-behind performances over the years. However, Yuzvendra Chahal gagged Pollard by enticing him with a loopy flighted delivery. Pollard's dismissal brought the Kiwi batsman, Corey Anderson, to the center. Ambati Rayudu added 30 runs in the company of Corey Anderson. The Aussie pacer, Mitchell Starc, dealt twin blows, dismissing Ambati Rayudu and Corey Anderson in consecutive deliveries sending the batting line-up of the Mumbai Indians into the doldrums. Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh, and Lasith Malinga's stay at the crease were short-lived thanks to some brilliant bowling from the pace bowling appendix. The Mumbai Indians finished with a meagre 117 runs on the board in their allocated quota of 20 overs - a total which was predominantly considered below par.
The veteran pacer, Zaheer Khan provides the early breakthrough
In reply, the pair of Parthiv Patel and Nic Maddinson restored to a conservative approach. Rohit Sharma introduced Lasith Malinga into the attack in the 3rd over, the pacer delivered and sent Nic Maddinson packing with a toe-crushing yorker uprooting the stumps. The skipper, Virat Kohli, took strike opposite Parthiv Patel. The veteran pacer, Zaheer Khan accounted for the skipper; edged it out to Harbhajan Singh in the slip cordon. After his dismissal, Rohit Sharma deployed two slips to counter-attack. However, Zaheer Khan trapped Yuvraj Singh leg before wicket.
Parthiv Patel finds a perfect ally in AB de Villiers
With still 100 runs adrift off the target, the talisman AB de Villiers combined forces with Parthiv Patel in an attempt to safeguard the run-chase. Despite the early breakthroughs, the pair manoeuvred singles at will and struck the odd-boundary to keep the scorecard moving; in the process added 50 runs for the fourth wicket in 52 deliveries.
Parthiv Patel brought up his half-century in 42 balls, and his ally AB de Villiers played the supporting role to perfection and anchored the innings at one end; scoring 45 runs off 48 deliveries. Parthiv Patel's 45-ball stay at the crease was laced with 7 boundaries. The duo knit together a 100-run partnership, which saw the team through the finish line. An all-round performance from the bowlers helped by the contributions from Parthiv Patel and AB de Villiers, RCB cruised to their second victory of the season.
