On This Day: A decade of Glenn Maxwell on the international circuit
When we talk about the shorter versions of the game, especially after the introduction of the T20 format and the renaissance that it has brought about in cricket, there are a few names that somehow come imbricated in the minutest of details with the threads of the sport, and Glenn Maxwell is one of them.
The hard-hitting all-rounder completes a decade of heroics in the international circuit, as it was on this very day that he played his first international affair in an ODI against Afghanistan at Sharjah.
Even though an incipient Maxi couldn’t really lay down the markers in his maiden international fixture, with every passing day, he started evolving into a beast of the shorter formats. Three days later, he conjured an imposing 38 against Pakistan and followed it up with a warring 28 in the following encounter.
The first glimpse of his career came in the final ODI of the series where he came all guns blazing at the Men in Green with an unbeaten 56, showcasing unparalleled striking brilliance and priming himself for tougher challenges that lay ahead.
Despite coming close to the magical three figures quite a few times, it took him 3 years to stitch his first ODI century as he hammered a brilliant 102 against a touring Sri Lanka in Sydney in 2015.
As we fast forward the clock to the modern day, he has established himself as a staple for the Australian cricket team in the shorter versions of the game and is currently involved in the hustle of aiming for the Test team after his last appearance in the whites came in 2017.
He has also towered over the RCB middle-order with a sizzling display of his pyrotechnics, capturing the perfect essence of his sobriquet, the Big Show. In ODIs, he has amassed 3390 runs from 121 matches at an average of 34.59 at a staggering strike rate of 126.06.
Maxi has been a part of the RCB squad for the last two years and has played 28 matches in Red and Gold. He has managed to amass 814 runs for the side at a breezy strike rate of 150 plus. It isn’t just his batting that has won games for Australia and RCB as he is capable of weaving incredible magic with the cherry in his arms that has seen him claim 9 wickets for RCB and 56 scalps for Australia in ODIs.
Here's to ten years of Glenn Maxwell on the international circuit. An enigma with whom there's never a dull moment on or off the cricket field
